10 Food Storage Mistakes That Are Secretly Wasting Your Money
7. Mistake 7: Forgetting to Rotate What You Buy
People often make a small but costly mistake when storing food. When new items arrive at home, they are hastily placed in front of the old ones. This causes older things to recede into the background and gradually fade from memory. This problem is very common in refrigerators, freezers, and kitchen cabinets. For example, fresh yogurt is placed in front of the old yogurt, a new loaf of bread covers the old packet, or new rations are placed on top of the old stock. After some time, old food expires or goes bad, and it has to be thrown away.
Therefore, always use the older items first. Whenever you bring home new items, place them behind the old ones and move the old ones to the front. This way, your eyes will fall on the older items first, and they will get used in time. Large supermarkets and restaurants also adopt this method, which reduces food waste.
Follow the same rule for the fridge and freezer as well. Place the food that is already there at the front and the new food at the back. If people at home often forget which food items to use first, you can set up a separate shelf or basket labeled “Use First.”
